The coining of the terra "vitamine" is attributed to Polish biochemist Casimir Funk while working on the isolation of the antiberiberi factor (Funk, 1911). He proposed that beriberi, pellagra, rickets, and scurvy were diseases of nutritional origin that could be prevented by "protective factors" present in foods. It was his belief that each of these protective factors was distinct and probably nitrogenous, hence the term "vitamine" form the Latin word for life, vita, and the chemical term "amine".Later, when it became evident that not all "vitamines" contained nitrogen, the term was shortened to vitamin (Wagner, A.F. and Folkers, K, 1964) . Today, the term vitamin is generally used to identify organic components of natural food distinct from carbohydrate, fat, protein, or minerals. These compounds are also present in the body in small quantities for a variety of biochemical functions, cannot be synthesized by the host, and when absent, a specific disease or deficiency symptom occurs.
