The significance attached to hard coal as one of the major energy sources with the largest reserves world wide, and, consequently its importance for use in power generation is certain to increase in the years to come. The conventional power plant technology is one of the most competitive and based on large proven operational experiences. The main incentive behind the further development is the achievement of cost reductions and environmental benefits in power generation by efficiency improvement In hard coal-fired power plants, the efficiency has doubled over the last 50 years. More than 15 years ago the power industry was faced with the challenge to retrofit the existing fossil-fired power plants with flue gas cleaning systems. This causes reductions in efficiency levels. These reductions have nevertheless been compensated in part by exploited other areas in these aging power plant components offering improvement potential. What options, without considering the question of economy, can be followed to bring about further reduction in fuel consumption?
