Integration of intelligent a.c. mitigation device VCSD in online monitoring and management systems for cathodic protection

For modern cathodic protection systems, online monitoring and online management is a matter of course. Values from on/off potential measurements, current and voltage values as well as the status of the c.p. rectifiers are transferred to a management system and can be accessed online at any time. For the operator, this data is important to proof the effectiveness of the cathodic protection and to ensure the safety of the pipeline. This safety aspect also includes a.c. mitigation devices, that should discharge interference voltages and currents on the pipeline to a defined earth-termination system. Today's intelligent a.c. mitigation devices already provide vital data to monitor the condition of the pipeline and to increase the security of the pipeline. For the operator, it is desirable to have these values also available in an online management system. This paper shows how intelligent a.c. mitigation devices can be integrated into a c.p. management system, to provide significant added value for the pipeline operator.
