The high corrosion resistance of decorative coatings of hexavalent chromium obtained in electroplating processes is well known for its wide use and high efficiency. This coating has been widely used in the furniture and shoe industry, obtained by electrodeposition in zamac parts. However, the electroplating process has a high degree polluting because the amount of effluent generated and toxicity of chemicals used in the process. It is known that the hexavalent chromium is carcinogenic and its wastes are hazardous and difficult to treat. Faced with this, the development of new technologies is aimed at obtaining processes corrosion resistant, environmentally friendly and economically viable. The alternative technology that can meet this is PVD-physical vapor deposition, with the sputtering process. In this context, this study aims to evaluate and compare the performance of chromium coatings and aluminum applied by sputtering with varnish with the performance of electroplated chrome plating. Therefore, the coatings were applied in zamac and were characterized as the cross-section morphology, electrochemically, and chemically physical. In addition, the coatings were characterized as the application feasibility in the footwear industry, furniture and metal fittings. The results showed that some of the aluminum and chrome finishes deposited by sputtering have similar characteristics in both the electrochemical performance as in the feasibility assessment tests in footwear and furniture industries as compared to the chrome plating in the conventional process, and can be a substitution of alternative sustainable level.
