The chain equipped with chain links consists of steel and has at least one surface coating which may be a chemically applied nickel coating. A zinc coating may be galvanically applied to the nickel coating, and a chrome coating to the zinc coating. The chain links consists of quenched and subsequently drawn steel or case hardened steel. An independent claim is included for a procedure for the surface treatment of a chain in which a nickel coating from a diluted nickel salt solution is chemically deposited on the chain links.
