In the last few years, the term lean and mean has become the most popular buzzword in management circles. Some interpret this to mean becoming fit and trim, but essentially one of the broadest implications is that the days of large-scale factory automation have been called into question for a variety of factors. Not the least of these management concerns is the increasingly shortened life cycle of products, calling into question projected ROI on automation investment.
