The method involves reading a data-matrix-code of an image field using a camera (3) arranged in an optical path of a laser marking system after producing the data-matrix-code on a workpiece (5) by the laser marking. The data-matrix-code is illuminated using an infrared light while reading the data-matrix-code. The red data-matrix-code of the image field is verified by comparing with a reference code, where the image field depends on a ratio of a focal length of a camera objective to a focal length of a camera adapter (2).
