This paper discuses new approaches to design CVD coated cemented carbide grades for high-speed metal cutting with improved toughness, wear and deformation resistances. Two topics will be highlighted: Coating microstructure and coating architecture. Aluminium oxide (Al{sub}2O{sub}3), which is the most important CVD material, is dealt with in detail and state-of-the-art techniques to deposit Al{sub}2O{sub}3 with improved properties will be discussed. A new coating design based on enhanced understanding of wear properties of coating materials is described briefly and practical cutting examples are given.
