In a typical automotive electrocoat system, a deionized water rinse follows the closed loop permeate rinses. In many cases, this deionized water continually overflows to drain and is made up with fresh deionized water. The paint solids sent to drain frequently cause downstream problems such as coagulation, resulting in clogged pipes. Additionally, the paint solids are considered hazardous waste and must undergo expensive wastewater treatment. Ultrafiltration provides one effective method for recovering the paint solids from the overflow stream. This process allows the paint solids to be captured and returned to the electrocoat bath. the permeate is then recycled back to the rinse stage, minimizing the consumption of deionized water. This environmentally friendly process has recnetly been installed on a DI dip rinse at a major automotive manufacturer. Benefits include paint savings, reduced lead in the wastewater, reduced pie-cleaning costs, reduced DI water usage and reduced waste processing costs.
