In conjunction with Southern California Edison (SCE), URS has developed a Graphical Information System (GIS) for site risk assessment and remediation planning. This tool, called RARIS (Risk and Remediation Information System), provides 3-D data visualization, statistical evaluation of site data, and calculation of soil volumes to support Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study and site closure processes for Manufactured Gas Plants (MGPs). A powerful and flexible tool, RARIS allows the definition of hypothetical remediation scenarios, including assignment of different remediation technologies, and then estimates the volume associated with each technology. Thus, a simple iterative process of evaluating any number of hypothetical scenarios may be followed in order to guide risk managers in finding the optimal balance of both risk reduction and cost effectiveness for MGP remediation. Reports provide tabulated and summarized results, as well as backup documentation on the assumptions used to derive each set of results. RARIS includes four modules: 3D Visualization, Risk, Background Comparison, and Remediation. The 3D Visualization module includes options for viewing either the baseline contamination (no remediation) or a selected remediation scenario. The Risk module allows for calculation of baseline and post-remediation risks for residential or industrial land uses. The Background Comparison module incorporates EPA-recognized statistical algorithms to compare site data with background datasets. Finally, with the Remediation module the user can assign in-situ or excavation remedial options to specific units of soil and calculate remedial volumes and view the site data in an interative fashion.
