Human Systems Integration (HSI) is a recognised requirement, part of which includes controlling human motion exposure. Metrics and guidance have previously been provided for human responses to low frequency motion, but relatively little have been developed for Repeated Shock (RS) and Whole Body Vibration (WBV) on planing craft. However, the increasing understanding of the human response to RS and WBV now provides the opportunity to develop more objective/quantified operational envelopes (a craft's responses to varying speed and wave height) related to RS and WBV exposure and the influence these have on HSI issues. The use of operational envelopes, produced using numerical simulation, may support the specification and acquisition of future craft, and the subsequent Test & Evaluation to ensure that the craft is fit-for-purpose for operating at high speeds in poor sea conditions. The envelopes can also provide operational planning guidance when balancing operational performance with safety requirements.
