Metamorphic mechanism is a class of mechanisms that change their mobility during motion. This raises much interest in the study and application of this mechanism. This paper investigates the resultant configurations due to mobility changes, and proposes an approach in mechanism synthesis based on elementary matrix operations on the configuration changes. The paper starts from a final configuration of the mechanism, enumerates possible combinations of different links, associates the added links with the binary operations in the matrix transformation of the mechanism configuration states and produces a synthesis procedure. An algorithm is produced and the isomorphism is used to reduce the number of mechanisms in the synthesis. Two mechanisms of this kind are presented as examples.
