Organic pigments are an important tool in the coloration of plastics to improve the esthetics and appearance of a plastic part or componant. The performance of a pigment is dependant on the microscopic physical characteristics of the pigment particles.A new visualization technique called "two photon" laser microscopy has been found to be useful in evaluating the distribution of pigment particles in a polymer matrix and correlating performance with physical characteristics.Beyond the microscopic characterization of pigment particles the macroscopic physical form can be important to both the ease and efficiency of used in a production setting.A microgranulate form of organic pigments is now available which provides better handling properties (i.e.flowability,higher bulk density dusting) than the traditional powder versions.
