Ground characterization for the Bradshaw Interceptor Section 5A tunnel

Section 5A is one segment of the Bradshaw/Folsom Interceptor System being constructed by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD). This 9,800-foot-long segment was successfully constructed in 1998 and 1999 through a park surrounded by several residential subdivisions using conventional soft ground tunneling methods. The tunnel was completed without any significant differing site conditions claims or any surface settlement or damage to surface facilities. One of the key factors in the successful completion of the tunnel was the accurate characterization of ground conditions. This paper will discuss this aspect of the project.
