Full-Scope Replica Simulator for the Bohunice V1 Nuclear Power Plant

Two VVER-440 V230 units are in operation at the Bohunice site in Slovakia. Until November 1997, no training simulator was available for these units. In November 1997, a new screen-operated Multifunction Simulator (MFS) for the V230 units was delivered by the consortium Corys TESS-Belgatom-Siemens within the PHARE "EVVEREST" project and installed at the VUJE training centre. The Slovak regulatory authorities licensed the use of this simulator to provide training but required also a Full Scope Simulator for all units in operation, corresponding to current world standards. At the same time, an extensive modemisation programme (the so-called Large Backfitting Programme) was carried out over two years on the Bohunice V230 units requiring an upgrade of the screen-operated simulator. The training centre at VUJE carried out a feasibility study and came to the conclusion that the most cost-effective solution to build the full-scope simulator would be to use the simulation models of the EYVEREST multifunction simulator, build replica control room, panels and connect the EWEREST simulation computer to these panels via an I/O system. Due to the modifications on the plant (Large Backfitting Programme), the EWEREST simulation models were upgraded simultaneously. Slovakia obtained financial support from the European Commission for a part of this project related to the model upgrade. In international competition, the contract was awarded to CORYS T.E.S.S. in Consortium with Belgatom, who joined forces with the Training Department of the Slovak Nuclear Power Plant Research Institute (VUJE) to realise the upgrade. The replica hard panels, the I/O system, the connection and the final full scope simulator validation were carried out jointly by CORYS T.E.S.S. and VUJE.
