The new international automotive quality system 'standard' ISO/TS 16949

Collaborative work involving American and European groups has culminated in the release of the ISO (International Standards Organisation) publication ISO/TS 16949:1999 known as 'Quality Systems -automotive suppliers particular requirements for the application of ISO 9001:1994'. The ISO/TS 16949 document has met with universal acceptance from participating members of the TC 176 Committee. In common with QS-9000, it is based on ISO 9001:1994 to which are added auto-industry supplements. This new motor industry specific 'standard' will become the accepted alternative to the existing American and European industry standards QS-9000 (3rd Edition),VDA-6.1, EAQF and AVSQ. It will affect all foundries and vendors who directly or indirectly supply the automakers. Third party ISO/TS 16949 registrations should be possible later this year. This paper reviews the background and development of ISO/TS 16949, explains the additions (and deletions) from the 3rd Edition of QS-9000, and explores the implications for the global automotive supply chain with special reference to the cast metals industry.
