Composite materials demonstrate an excellent thermal response under severe fire conditions. Heat transfer is slow in comparison to metallic materials due to a combination of low thermal conductivity, endothermic decomposition of the matrix andstructural integrity due to noncombustible reinforcement. An experimentally validated model for the fire behaviour of thick composite laminates in hydrocarbon fires has been developed to aid in the application of composite materials in fire sensitiveareas.
