MOESSBAUER STUDIES IN MAGNETIC MULTILAYERS

Magnetic multilayers have been the subject of extensive studies over the last two decades in the area of Materials Science. Mossbauer spectroscopy has been employed from the very beginning to explore these materials at the atomic level. We present in this review a short introduction to the basic experimental methods used for their characterization, with some emphasis on the Mossbauer technique, and a literature survey on Mossbauer studies and theoretical calculations of magnetic hyperfine interactions. The focus of this presentation is on the enhanced hyperfine fields observed in Fe atomic layers near the interface and their variation in inner layers. As an example of the methodology followed in such investigations, a more detailed overview is given of recent work in Fe/Pt and Fe/Au multilayers.
