MTR Corporation operates one of the world's most densely utilised urban mass transit systems with high expectations for service reliability. Demands on the track and its management are high. The efforts made to continuously improve the performance of the track and reduce failures are examined, results analysed and conclusions drawn. Lessons learnt from management of the original three lines were input into the trackwork specification for construction and maintainability of the two most recentlyconstructed lines, which opened in 1998.
