"Organization of a monitoring scheme for sheep and goat production systems". Many reports agree on the need of an information and data collection system for sheep and goat production systems and have lead to the setting up of a group of experts. The work carried out by this group has provided the general structure of a monitoring scheme whose objective is to provide the main agents within this sector with accurate and harmonized elements to assess their situation and their prospects. At this stage, there is the need to establish a grid of indicators with their corresponding calculation modes, as well as to organize a permanent coordination group whose mission is to assess the value and limitations of the information distributed as well as to manage its confidentiality within the framework of the monitoring scheme. This is a necessary condition so that professional and development organizations in the different countries are associated. The data here presented are the first contribution to this scheme. The low number of technical and economic data available in many regions, the lack of reliable comparable multiannual series and the difficulty to set up a standardized methodology of comparative analysis taking into account the diversity of situations and contexts are some of the issues here highlighted.
