Environmental and Chemical Studies on Trace Element Levels in Some Egyptian Fruit and Condiments

Instrumental multi-neutron activation analysis (INAA), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), and flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) have been applied to the determination of Ag, Al, Au, Ba, Br, Be, Ca, Cd, Ce, Cl, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Eu, Fe, Ga, Hg, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sr, Th, Ti, V & Zn in four kinds (local names date Ⅰ, malakabi; date Ⅱ, saccoti; date Ⅲ, bartamoda; date Ⅳ, gondaila) of Egyptian date (Phoenix dactylifera, Palmae Family), Egyptian potato (Solarium tuberosum) and sweet potato (Impomea batata, Solanaceae Family), mandarin (Citrus reticulata) and lemon (Citrus aurantifolia, Rutaceae Family), grapes (Vitis vinifera, Vitaceae Family), mallow (Malva parviflora, Malvaceae Family), garlic (Allium satium) and onion (Allium cepa, Liliaceae Family) and purslane (Portulace orleraceae, Portulaceae Family). The results obtained by INAA, ICP-AES and AAS are consistent. Some of the results show higher values of the elements concentration obtained by ICP-AES than by INAA, but this is usual and in the range of acceptable errors. Statistical analysis of the database shows high, positive and significant correlation coefficient values (r = 0.591―0.996) due to proportional relationship between the elements existing in these crops (if one element increases, the other elements increase, i.e., the uptake of the elements increases together).
