In Japan, gas turbine cogenerations have been prevailed since about 15 years ago. However, in these days, most users who consume anytime large quantity of steam have already introduced the gas turbine cogeneration, while the other users who need various features of steam demand hesitates to introduce a gas turbine cogeneration. The reason is that the steam demand of such users varies in wide range season by season or during day and night, so considerable amount of excess steam generated by the gas turbine shall be abandoned without use. One of the useful ways of saving the excess steam is to inject it into the gas turbine combustor to convert into the electric power. IHI developed IHI-FLECS, a new type of steam injected gas turbine system to follow varied quantity of injection steam. One of the main feature of IHI-FLECS is that a steam superheater is not required while it is always furnished downstream the gas turbine in a conventional steam injected gas turbine. This feature enables to improve the heat recovery efficiency. Moreover, IHI has developed TRI-FLECS as a favorable system for the users who consume steam in the further wide range from full to zero consumption, TRI-FLECS produce certain quantity of compressed air besides. Fourteen (14) units of IHI-FLECS and TRI-FLECS have been in service in Japan since 19%. This paper describes the concept and the characteristics of IHI-FLECS and TRI-FLECS, and the control system to follow the demand of electricity and steam.
