Recently, there has been major growth in the use of magnesium (particularly die cast magnesium) in areas such as telecommunications, computers, sporting goods and automotive applications. Magnesium's ability to maintain and capture more of these markets may well be determined by processes available for providing a high-quality surface finish on these components. The surface finish is often critical - not only for cosmetic reasons, but also for corrosion protection. This paper will describe a new, environmentally friendly, magnesium anodizing process that provides excellent corrosion protection. A newly developed coloring technology can be combined directly with the anodizing process. This is a major breakthrough, because previously existing processes required additional operations, such as painting, in order to provide a colored finish. This combination of corrosion protection and unique coloring technology has the potential to significantly increase the market for a wide range of magnesium-based products.
