Globalization and increased competition are catchwords to characterize the present development on a world wide market. The companies ability to realize innovative concepts will be decisive to resist the progressive demands on competitiveness. The objectives of these concepts always must be to achieve high product quality with a minimum of expenditure. Maintenance ensures that design-based availability and safety are retained and can be adjusted to current requirements. Maintenance with its significant influence on life-cycle costs can be the decisive key to ensure enhanced international competitiveness. Adapted probabilistic reliability and risk assessment combined with the informations extracted from generic and plant specific data as well as from structural analyses yield a solid foundation for decision making in a wide range of usage for maintenance optimization. For this purpose we have developed ROI (Risk Orientated Inspection), i. e. adequate risk-informed procedures to provide significant savings. Examples illustrating the procedures demonstrate the benefit.
