Hydrogen-enrichment of natural gas is widely identified as an important intermediate step towards a fully sustainable energy supply. Economics of scale suggest a preference for high-volume hydrogen entry-points upstream in the natural gas transport grid. The promises of this upstream entry option, however, require careful weighing against possible adverse consequences. From a natural gas grid operator perspective, obvious examples of issues that need clarification are the (long-term) impact of hydrogen on pipeline and gas compressor material integrity, on gas metering and on safety risks. From the point of view of gas trading companies, the most important prerequisite for accepting hydrogen-enrichment of natural gas is continuation of the safe and efficient operation of all existing natural gas appliances on their customers sites.
