Liberalisation in the UK - ten years of learning lessons

Britain continues to lead the world into liberalised energy markets. This month has seen the last domestic consumers win the right to choose their electricity supplier, and business users have bought power in a competitive market for between four and eight years now. The electricity supply industry was privatised very nearly a decade ago. Liberalisation of the gas supply industry was completed last year; the industry has been in the private sector for more than a decade.
