Effective Visual Field in Driving Revealed by Gaze-contingent Window Method

Our visual system acquires information by frequently shifting the gaze, However, it is not clear to what extent the visual system gathers valid information at each fixation while observers are engaging in dynamic visual-motor tasks, including driving. In this study, we investigated the effective visual field by superimposing the gaze-contingent window in real time while simulating a driving situation. Our results showed that observers could detect rushing cars and pedestrians in relatively wide visual field, however, the effective visual field was restricted within 10~15 degrees in eccentricity to maintain safety driving.
