Feasibility of the use of KRL shear stability test (CEC L-45-A-99) was investigated as an alternative method for JASO M347-95 sonic shear stability test currently specified in the JASO M315-98 standard, as a part of JASO ATF subcommittee activities. Representative ATFs from Japanese market were sampled and evaluated by the both methods. Even though greater viscosity shear loss were obtained by the KRL method compared with the JASO sonic test, a reasonable correlation was observed between the KRL and JASO methods. Comparison between field viscosity data 'and the bench shear tests data were also discussed.
