Influence of fuel properties on the exhaust emissions was investigated using a direct injection diesel engine for passenger cars with a common rail injection system, focusing on the effect of pilot injection. It was found that the influence of cetane index on THC is remarkable under the early pilot injection timing, and the influence of aromatics on smoke is remarkable when the interval between main and pilot injection is short.
