It is important to detect a sudden drop in driver's arousal level for prevention of rear-end collisions. These accidents occur because the stopping distance of a car is greater than the distance headway from the lead car. It has been reported that the stopping distance is sometimes lengthened unexpectedly by a driver's sudden delay of cognition and reaction. The authors studied about the relationship between braking response and the arousal level by measuring driver's time headway, time-to-collision and braking reaction time during a car-following driving simulator. As a result, it was found that drivers' braking response varied according to their arousal level.
