Pethoxamid (Code Number: TKC-94), 2-chloro-N-(2-ethoxyethyi)-N-(2-methyl-1 -phenyl-1 -propenyl)acetamide, whose chemical structure is classified as an acetamide but not an acetanilide, is a novel selective herbicide discovered by Tokuyama Corporation. Itshows excellent herbicidal activity against both grass and broadleaf weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Digitaria ischaemun, Matricaria species and Amaranthus retroflexus at a dosage rate of between 1.0 and 2.4 kg a.i./ha (pre-emergence or early post-emergence treatment) and is used mainly for maize and soybean. It can also be used in admixture with a variety of herbicides to give much more effective control, especially on broad-leaf weeds. Its major metabolic pathway in animals, plants and soil proceeds through glutathione conjugate. The toxicological evaluation and environmental behavior studies allow the classification of pethoxamid into the safe herbicide group.
