ISO 14001 as Applied to Metal Finishing

In much the same way as the ISO 9000 quality standard is the blueprint for quality control, the ISO 14001 standard gives companies the proper structure to implement an environmental management system. Companies that adopt the ISO 14001 standard are required to internally audit the pollution prevention, personnel training and emergency preparedness programs. Top management is required to identify and monitor specific goals in order to reduce their significant environmental impacts (and liabilities). The U.S. EPA has indicated that metal finishing companies that adopt the standard may be more likely to avoid undesired governmental scrutiny and the resulting financial and legal penalties.
