Adapting existing technology to new applications can yield economical and low risk solutions. Promising examples are given in ground transportation technology. Geo-satellite and Differential Geo-satellite Positioning Systems provide simple and rapid ways to determine earth-based coordinates. Technology can be implemented in hand-held, vehicle-borne and air-borne systems. These new positioning methods facilitate the use of Geographical-based Information Systems for management and inspection of infrastructures and moving stocks. Wireless and satellite communications provide real-time data links between remote and home stations, and allow remote monitoring and control of field equipment. High-speed video imaging and analysis technology is being applied to automated guideway and vehicle inspection systems.
