A review of key issues facing the sludge pumping engineer

Viscometry measurements on sludge are unreliable due to the variable nature of sludges. This paper examines the dilemma facing the system designer and proposes that the only effective design route is to cater for uncertainty. The relative merits of positive displacement and rotodynamic pump types are discussed against this background of uncertainty. A number of practical pointers for successful implementation of a sludge pumping system are given.
