A new development in high speed electrogalvanizingbased on zinc methanesulfonate (ZnMSA) shows promise inproducing smooth zinc deposits at current densities up to 300A/dm~2. The conductivity of the ZnMSA solution is superior tothat of zinc sulfate over wide zinc metal, pH and temperatureranges. Rotating cathode studies investigated the effects of steelstrip speed, solution flow rate, pH, zinc metal and additiveconcentrations on the surface roughness, deposit structure andorientation of the zinc coatings. The deposits were characterizedusing scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, x-raydiffraction and surface profilometry. Results from the rotatingcathode studies comparing a standard zinc sulfate electrolyte to thenew zinc methanesulfonate solution will be discussed.
