The U.S. Army generates several million liters of used engine oil annually from diesel-powered vehicles. Handling, transfer, storage, and disposal of this used engine oil is a significant problem for the Army worldwide. Many commercial truckingfleets blend used engine oil with on-board diesel fuel as a cost-saving disposal method. As part of the U.S. Army's National Automotive Center's (NAC) technology transfer program, the NAC initiated a series of screening tests to evaluate the effects ofblending used engine lubricating oil with the Army's single battlefield fuel, JP-8. This paper details the results of exhaust emission tests performed on two heavy-duty diesel engines: a 140 kW GM 6.2L used in the HMMWV, and a 260 kW DDC Series 60 engine. EPA transient-cycle tests performed on baseline JP-8 and on JP-8 blended with up to 7.5 volume percent used lubricating oil showed no significant increase in CO or NOx emissions, and only modest increases in HC, PM and smoke emissions. In all test cases,exhaust emission levels remained below the regulated levels for the relevant model year of the engines tested. Based in part on the results of this emissions screening program, the Army performed the Army CRC 210 Hour Wheeled Vehicle Endurance Cycledurability test on a 140 kW GM 6.2L engine and the Army CRC 240 Hour Track Vehicle Endurance Cycle durability test on a DDC 6V53T engine. Field testing in Army wheeled vehicles is currently underway.
