Today, the discharge of trade effluents has become high profile and top of many Environmental Manager's agendas. It is an area where significant cost savings can be made to production costs. It is also becoming increasingly obvious across all industries that reduced environmental impacts from industrial sources are not necessarily cost prohibitive, but quite the contrary, sometimes providing significant savings with the introduction of small, relatively minor alterations to existing process plant This paper describes the application of dynamic separation for the removal of suspended solids from a liquid stream with particular reference to it's application to the upgrading of Alcan Chemical's existing treatment facility at Burntisland in Scotland. The site constraints meant that whatever process was being considered had to have a small footprint to allow a full-scale plant installation to take place, as a conventionally designed settlement process was likely to provide space problems on site. A separate requirement was for the process to be sufficiently robust at absorbing shock loads during times when solids loadings could potentially increase. The paper will also describe the cycle of on-site pilot demonstration to full-scale installation and commissioning for the Eff Pac Process currently operational at Burntisland.
