An experimental investigation has been carried out to assess the validity o f the work rate concept to characterize the fretting wear process when contacting solids undergo complex orbital motions. The combined impact and sliding fretting wezr of Inconeel-600 tube specimens against 410 stainless steel drilled hole supports has been investigated using a singel span tube fetting test rig. The tests were conducted in water, at room tempe4rature. Analysis os the experimental results indicated that the widely accepted work rate parameter might introduce an order of mangitude error in the prediction o f wear rates.
