Electron energy loss spectroscopy and Fresnel contrast analysis are used to characterise the electron structure changes as a function of Fe layer width in a series of coherent face-centred Fe-Cu multilayers. There are systematic changes in the Fe white line intensity and L_3/L_2 ratio and the projected potential profiles as a function of Fe layer width. Correlations between the atomic and electron structure and magnetic properties are discussed and different models of the atomic structure are assessed in the light of the experimental data.
