Glycogen phosphorylase plays an important role in the regulation of glycogen metabolism in muscle. It exist in two interconvertible forms: phosphorylase a and b. Phosphorylase phosphatase converts "active" phosphorylase α into “inactive” phosphorylase b by cleavage of the phosphate group from serine-14 of phosphorylase a. The reverse reaction, conversion of phosphorylase b to a, is catalyzed by phosphorylase b kinase.
