GOLD EXTRACTION FROM BIOLEACHED CHALCOPYRITE RESIDUES USING DIFFERENT REAGENT SYSTEMS

There is considerable interest in the bioleaching of chalcopyrite concentrate for the production of copper. The residue of bioleached chalcopyrite often contains gold that needs to be recovered. Despite the high efficiency of copper bioleaching, the residue may contain appreciable quantities of copper, and the difficulties of cyanidation of gold from copper bearing materials are well recognised. This paper reports the results of using different methods to recover the gold values from bioleached chalcopyrite concentrate. In particular, the behaviour of cyanide and cyanide in the presence of ammonium ions as gold lixiviants were studied. The ammonia was employed to reduce the impact of the copper on cyanide consumption. Thiosulphate as a gold lixiviant was also employed with the aim of achieveing rapid leaching rates and to reduce the impact of residual sulphur species on lixiviant consumption. Bromine solution was used to research acidic gold leaching. The paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of using different reagents with respect to reagent consumption, selectivity and kinetic efficiency.
