Blood transfusion: when and how do I use blood components?

Transfusion medicine has become more sophisticated in small animal practice partly because of advances in blood typing capabilities in private practice, and partly because of increased access to components such as canine packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate through commercial blood banks. Most feline transfusions are still whole blood because of difficulties in collection in a closed system, separation, and storage of the small volumes of red cells or plasma.
