Emergency department blood transfusion predicts early massive transfusion and early blood component requirement

MT protocols have increasingly been implemented across trauma centers to improve the rapid delivery of massive amounts of predefined ratios of blood products.611 These protocols usually entail the rapid mobilization (thawing, crossmatching) and sustained delivery of large amounts of RBCs, plasma, and platelets (PLTs) to patients with exsanguinating hemorrhage. This component of damage control resuscitation has been increasingly advocated by the military based on their collective experience in Iraq and Afghanistan.
