Diagnosing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as an increase in the number of bacteria in the upper small intestine during the inter-digestive period. Direct culture of duodenal juice and a number of indirect tests have been developed to diagnose this condition, but each is associated with problems of interpretation and there is often poor correlation between methods.
