Geriatric horses (>20 years old) often suffer the adverse effects of poor dentition, chronic intestinal parasitism and pituitary/thyroid dysfunction. Their tolerance of excess calcium, glucose and fiber are reduced and requirements for protein, phosphorus, vitamin C and perhaps B-vitamins tend to be higher than in younger horses. Cold weather or changes in their environment will also result in dramatic weight loss.
