A new laboratory has been set up at the MaterialsTechnology Laboratory for evaluating the performance ofbatteries and battery materials for electric vehicles and otherapplications. Methodology has been developed for production oftest electrodes from battery grade powders and optimization ofthe electrode composition. The electrochemical evaluation isperformed using three computerized galvanostat/potentiostatsfor a total of 96 truly independent channels for simultaneousexperiments. Along with the conventional electrochemicalcharacterization, transmission and scanning electronmicroscopes, complemented by other techniques, are used tocorrelate the microstructure with the electrochemical behaviour,thus providing a diagnostic tool for battery materials.
