Professor NEWKOME begins: I am going to go back and add a slight perspective to these two talks. It really goes back to 1978, with Professor Fritz VOgtle's paper in Synthesis. In that paper, he defined really two new types of organic construction: one which now has taken on the term "dendritic," and can be defined by a mathematical progression. In that paper he called it a "cascade synthesis." Also in VOgtle's 1978 paper in small print is a second mode of construction which he called a "tire tread synthesis," the concept was synthetically shown in the slide from Professor Rajca's presentation. It was then in 1985, when Don and I published in separate papers the thought process of utilizing a cascade methodology to construct polymers via a mathematical progression. Don used a 1.2 branching mode of construction, I used a 1:3 pattern for the basic construction of molecular trees.
