When the internal combustion engine works in plateau regions, as a result of low atmospheric pressure, the air density decreases, giving rise to a change in the performance of the engine. The power of the engine will decrease, while the specific fuel consumption will increase, and more harmful substance will be emitted. The performance of the naturally aspirated diesel engine in regions at diefferent altitudes have been studied by means of a micro-compter controlled atmospheric-simulating system for the internal combustion engine. In this paper, load characteristics, speed characteristics, multiple-characteristics and soot emission in different altitude regions have been analyed and compared. At the same time, in the condition of constant excess air ratio with different ttmospheric pressure, a comparison between dynamic property and specific fuel consumption ahs been made. The acheived conclusions serve to clarify some of the uncertainties about the properties of the naturally aspirated diesel engine in plateau regions and contribute to solving some of the problems that diesel engines have when working in plateau regions.
