The Laser Safety Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Work with lasers and laser systems must be performed with minimal exposure to laser hazards. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) organizations and personnel are required to comply with Department of Energy (DOE) Order 5480.4, "Environmental Protection, Safety, and Health Protection Standards," that requires laser activities be performed in compliance with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z136.1, "American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers." Laboratory personnel must also comply with the provisions of the written laser safety program, "Lasers," which supplements the ANSI Z136.1 standard The implementation of these requirements in a research and development environment is the subject of the following paper.
