When using an electronic test instrument, it is a common practice to adjust its calibration based on a single reading defined to be "too far from nominal." This could be based on the instrument's specification limits or guard bands; in either case, this may be the wrong strategy. Evidence is presented to support a practice of monitoring the instrument's performance and using this long-run performance data as the basis for calibration adjustment decisions.
